Shelby Newstead

Shelby began creating from an early age. Growing up in the beautiful Kent countryside, she spent most of her time outside amongst nature, surrounded by animals, many of which inspire her pet portrait work.
At nine months old, Shelby was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a particularly aggressive form of cancer. On the 27th of March 1996, a large tumour was removed from her chest at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. Shelby went on to make a remarkable recovery through natural treatment and a strict organic diet.

her family and close friends founded a charity in her name, the Pride of Britain Award-winning “The Friends of Shelby Newstead”. On the 16th November 1996, the first of many was held at Brands Hatch Place, in Kent.
What began as a celebration of her recovery evolved into an ongoing mission, with Shelby’s artwork becoming the focal point of their annual charity auctions. To date, her work has helped raise over £1 million for disadvantaged children, including her record-breaking Iconic Marilyn Monroe, which sold for £50,000!

when her Art teacher, Miss Lane, asked to buy one of her GCSE art paintings for £100.00. Her first painting sold, and unbeknown to Shelby, the first of many. Miss Lane’s belief in her work proved pivotal, encouraging Shelby to recognise her talent, and helping her secure exhibitions at prestigious galleries including the Turner Contemporary in Margate, and Tate Modern, London.
Shelby went on to study at art college, but soon realised it wasn’t the right path for her. Art became a personal pursuit while she worked full-time in London, until a turning point in 2022 prompted her to leave the city and return to her true calling. Becoming a full-time artist, she describes it simply as “the best decision I ever made.”
Shelby Newstead
Shelby paints figurative sensual women and romantic scenes, that explore intimacy, confidence, and connection.
The women you see in Shelby's work have a feeling of desire, softness, and strength, women who have a story, who are unapologetic, and entirely their own. Whether embracing a lover, or lost in a feeling, her figures exist in moments of romance and quiet power.
Painting women enables Shelby to remind herself that you can be whoever you want to be. A woman who understands herself, embraces her beauty and flaws, and above all else, believes in herself.
Today, Shelby lives in the Kent countryside with her husband Dan, and German Pointer Nala. She works from her light-filled Studio in her garden, wearing an oversized sweatshirt, listening to love songs, a paintbrush in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, with the next masterpiece underway…
